Today’s surprise from HMD Global, the Finnish tech giant, is that the Android 14 update is now officially rolling out to two more models: the Nokia X30 and the Nokia G60, as per their statement yesterday, which implied a more conservative plan for updates. That follows criticism of its tardy approach to updates, having updated only the Nokia G42 5G to Android 14—while competitors have surged ahead with widespread updates across product lines.
On their part, it has been confirmed that the update is rolling out in Taiwan and brings the usual February security patch with it, alongside all the regular improvements of Android 14. Any proprietary changes or additions that the update may bear as part and parcel of its configuration, unfortunately, have so far remained hidden, as HMD Global has not chosen to touch upon such matters, leaving users and experts alike to wonder at any potential HMD-specific optimizations.
That takes the total number of HMD smartphones updated to Android 14 to just three, in an absolutely sharp contrast to the extensive catalog of devices by the company. That then raises the question of just how committed HMD Global really is to these devices, especially after the recent pronouncements from the brand about efforts apparently moving away from the Nokia-branded phones to those they make under their own brand name.
With the whole wide tech world gazing on, there is only a little hope that more Nokia phones will soon be graced with the Android 14 update. What temps that is the current trajectory of the company to pivot out of Nokia branding, telling a whole new story for HMD Global and its relationship with the storied Nokia brand.
