In a highly anticipated move, Apple is gearing up to release the iOS 17.2 update, poised to hit compatible iPhone models before the year’s end. The forthcoming update promises to address a critical bug affecting iPhone users attempting to wirelessly charge their devices in General Motors (GM) vehicles.
The bug, which emerged following the iOS 17.1.1 update, has left GM drivers grappling with non-functional wireless charging capabilities. While GM responded weeks ago, stating, “We are aware of this concern and are investigating. There’s nothing we can confirm at this point,” Apple’s latest release notes for the iOS 17.2 Release Candidate explicitly state, “Fixes an issue that may prevent wireless charging in certain vehicles.”
Although Apple’s notes don’t explicitly mention GM, industry experts speculate that the Cupertino giant is honing in on the problem plaguing GM’s wireless charging system. This development comes as a welcome relief for iPhone users who have experienced frustrating roadblocks when attempting to utilize wireless charging features in their GM vehicles.
Interestingly, Apple has decided to pull one feature from the iOS 17.2 update—Apple Music’s collaborative playlist. This feature, allowing approved accounts to add tunes to an Apple Music playlist, has faced concerns about potential misuse. Apple fears that some users might exploit the feature to annoy Apple Music subscribers by tampering with their playlists and adding disruptive tunes.
Adding to the excitement, iOS 17.2 brings a plethora of new features, including the Journal feature, allowing users to maintain a personal diary protected by Face ID or Touch ID. Furthermore, the Action Button gains the Translate feature, offering users a more seamless and integrated translation experience.
Notably, iOS 17.2 extends its improvements to the telephoto cameras on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The release notes promise “improved Telephoto camera focusing speed when capturing small faraway objects.” Additionally, these models will be able to record spatial video for viewing on the Vision Pro headset.
This update is poised to be the final major release of the year and includes various enhancements, such as improved weather widgets and AirDrop upgrades. The latter introduces expanded contact sharing options and the ability to share boarding passes, movie tickets, and other eligible passes by bringing two iPhones together.
Qi2 wireless charging support will be extended to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 lines post-installation of the iOS 17.2 update. Enthusiasts can anticipate the update rolling out as early as next week, marking a crucial milestone for iPhone users grappling with wireless charging issues in GM vehicles.
