Honor is gearing up for the global launch of its flagship device, the Magic 6 Pro, at the MWC (Mobile World Congress) on February 25. The phone has already made headlines for its remarkable battery performance in near-space conditions, where it survived a three-hour flight at over 16,000 feet in the air with temperatures dropping below zero and landed back on Earth with 86% battery left.
Now, the Magic 6 Pro has taken on another challenge: a head-to-head comparison with Samsung’s Galaxy S24 Ultra, the current leader in the smartphone market, in a freezing battery test conducted by the popular Unbox Therapy YouTube channel (via Android Central).
The experiment involved placing both phones in a freezer at -7 degrees Fahrenheit (-22 degrees Celsius) and monitoring their battery levels over time. Both phones started with a 59% charge before entering the freezer.
After twenty hours, the Galaxy S24 Ultra had dropped to 34%, while the Magic 6 Pro had maintained a 40% battery. After 48 hours, the Galaxy S24 Ultra had drained completely, but the Magic 6 Pro still had 33% battery left. The test continued for five days, and the Magic 6 Pro showed no signs of giving up, as it still had over 10% battery remaining. This is an impressive, if not amazing, feat of battery endurance.
The host of the YouTube channel explained that the Magic 6 Pro’s battery is inspired by electric vehicles’ batteries and that Honor has developed a customized low-temperature algorithm through the phone’s E1 power management chip, which optimizes battery performance in extreme environments.
The Magic 6 Pro was launched in China in mid-January, and it boasts a 6.8-inch display and a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, along with a 5,600mAh battery. The phone also has a stunning camera, which is optimized to capture fast-moving action like fencing. The phone has received rave reviews from users and critics alike, and it is expected to be a strong contender in the global smartphone market.
The MWC will be held in Barcelona, Spain, from February 25 to March 2, and it will showcase the latest innovations and trends in the mobile industry. Honor will be one of the main exhibitors at the event, and it will also unveil its new Magic OS, which is based on HarmonyOS, the operating system developed by Huawei, Honor’s former parent company. Honor became an independent brand in November 2020, after Huawei sold it to a consortium of Chinese companies due to US sanctions that prevented Huawei from accessing key technologies and components.
The Magic 6 Pro is expected to be priced at around $800, which is considerably lower than the Galaxy S24 Ultra, which costs around $1,200. The phone will be available in various colors, such as black, white, blue, and purple, and it will also have a special edition with a leather back. The phone will support both 5G and Wi-Fi 6 connectivity, and it will have a fast-charging feature that can charge the phone from 0% to 100% in less than an hour.
The Magic 6 Pro is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated smartphones of 2024, and it will be interesting to see how it fares against the Galaxy S24 Ultra and other rivals in the global market. Honor has certainly raised the bar for battery performance, and it has proven that it can deliver a flagship device that can compete with the best in the industry.
