The Global Mobile Awards (GLOMO) have revealed the nominees for various categories ahead of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024, which will kick off in Barcelona, Spain, on February 26 (via GSMArena). The categories span across Mobile Tech, Digital Everything, Device, Tech4Good, Government Leadership, and Outstanding Achievement. Let’s take a look at some of the awards and the contenders.
The Best Smartphone award has some tough competition, as GLOMO has shortlisted the Apple iPhone 15 Pro models, Google Pixel 8 series, OnePlus Open, OPPO Find N3, Samsung Galaxy S23 series, and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5. It is interesting to see both foldable and non-foldable phones vying for the title. The previous winner of this award was the iPhone 14 Pro.
The Breakthrough Device Innovation award has some familiar names among the nominees. Google stands out for its AI imaging capabilities and commitment to offer extended software updates for Pixel phones. Honor, the Chinese company, has also secured a nomination for its innovative silicon-carbon dual-battery technology in its Magic V2.
OnePlus Open, with OxygenOS 13.2 Open Canvas, and OPPO Find N3, with ColorOS 13.2 Canvas Shift, are also in the running, as they both provide similar functionality for multitasking on foldable phones. Qualcomm, with its latest chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, is another strong contender for this award.
The Device category also includes another award: Best Connected Consumer Device. This award acknowledges “an everyday consumer electronic device or gadget that brings new and smart applications, efficiencies, and functionality to the user.” It covers cameras, gadgets, household appliances, gaming consoles, music players, and more. A noteworthy mention in this category is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra.
This year also introduces a new award, which is not surprising considering the recent hype around artificial intelligence in mobile tech. The new addition is the Best AI Innovation award, which focuses on “the potential for using generative AI for positive improvements in the mobile sector.”
Qualcomm, for the Qualcomm AI Engine, and Pangu-Weather, for developing the first AI weather forecasting model to surpass conventional NWP methods, are among the challengers for this award.
