Nokia, the largest telecom company in Finland, and Honor, a well-known smartphone brand, have agreed to a 5G patent licensing. Nokia has negotiated a number of agreements with significant smartphone manufacturers in the last year, and this latest agreement highlights the importance and worth of its portfolio of patents.
Although Nokia did not reveal the specifics of the arrangement, it stated that Honor is permitted to use its 5G standard essential patents (SEPs). Nokia and Vivo, two other Chinese smartphone manufacturers, are embroiled in a legal battle concerning the former’s infringement of the latter’s 5G SEPs. A temporary ban on the sale of Oppo and Vivo devices in several European countries was the outcome of the disagreement.
Honor, which separated from Huawei last year, decided to settle with Nokia amicably in order to prevent any possible legal action.
Honor recognizes and cherishes the rights to others’ intellectual property and feels that reasonable and just IP licensing is essential to the growth of the mobile sector. Honor’s commitment to innovation and providing a smart life for everyone through all scenarios and channels is reflected in the patent cross-license deal with Nokia, according to Wenyu Zhou, head of global intellectual property at Honor.
Nokia is the proud owner of an enormous patent portfolio that includes over 20,000 patent families, over 6,000 of which are tied to 5G technologies. Over €140 billion has been invested in research and development since 2000, yielding these patents.
In order to develop and license its innovations to other businesses without forcing them to make their own R&D efforts, Nokia has been making significant R&D investments. This is a clever and successful tactic that calls for a high degree of creativity and knowledge.
