For iOS users of Gmail, Google has made it simpler to unsubscribe from unsolicited emails with a new feature launched in the app. Tap the button below the subject line and above the email content to choose not to receive bulk emails like newsletters or promotions. Android Authority was the first to notice this new feature.
The new unsubscribe button is located at the top of the email next to the sender’s name, as shown in the screenshot below. This means that you don’t have to scroll down or tap the three-dot menu at the top of the message window to access this option. You can simply swipe left or right on the email and tap the unsubscribe button once.
This feature is similar to what is available on Gmail’s web version, which also has an unsubscribe button below the subject line and next to the sender’s details. However, this feature is not yet available on Gmail’s Android app, which means that Android users will have to wait for Google to roll it out.
Google has updated its help website with instructions for both platforms, but it has not stated when this functionality will be accessible for Android users. It might take a few days for certain senders to cease sending you emails after you opt out, according to Google, and some may require you to visit their website in order to unsubscribe from their emails.
Google also says that it may show you a unique identifier or a list ID instead of the sender’s name after you unsubscribe from an email. This is because some senders may use third-party services or apps to manage their mailing lists.
In addition to this feature, Gmail also sends occasional tips for unsubscribing from bulk senders that you rarely read. You can enable or disable these tips by going to Settings > Inbox Customizations > Inbox tips > turn off or on the “Unsubscribe tips” toggle button.
iOS users who wish to delete undesirable emails without leaving their app may like Gmail’s new unsubscribe option. Additionally, it demonstrates that Google is considering customer input and working to enhance its offerings. I hope this option will soon be available to Android users as well.
